Help & FAQ
Plain-language answers to the questions people ask most about NYCExamPrep.com.
What is NYCExamPrep.com?
NYCExamPrep.com is a free study site for New York City civil service exams. It offers original practice questions across 8 subjects, timed mock exams, daily practice, flashcards, and a DCAS study guide covering the 13 abilities DCAS actually tests — all built around the official Notices of Examination.
Is it really free?
Yes. NYCExamPrep.com is completely free — no payments, no subscriptions, and no sign-up required to start practicing. The site is supported by advertising, which only appears in allowed spots on the site and never inside practice questions or timed mock exams.
Are the questions official DCAS questions?
No. All questions on this site are original practice questions written for study purposes. DCAS does not publish an official question bank, so nothing here is a real exam question. This site is not affiliated with the NYC Department of Citywide Administrative Services (DCAS) or the City of New York.
How do mock exams work?
A mock exam is a timed practice test of 25, 50, or 100 questions, drawn from the question bank across all subjects. You answer without feedback until you submit, just like the real exam format. After you submit, you get a score report with per-subject results and a pass or fail verdict against the real DCAS pass mark of 70%. Your mock results are saved in your history on the My Progress page.
How do daily practice and flashcards work?
Daily Practice gives you a fresh set of practice questions every day to keep your skills sharp and build a study habit. Flashcards are 25 quick drill cards covering vocabulary, mathematics, clerical skills, DCAS facts, and situational judgment — tap a card to flip it, and mark it “I know this” or “Still learning” to track which ones you have mastered. Your known cards are saved on this device.
Where is my progress saved?
Right now, your progress is saved in this browser on this device (localStorage). It does not follow you to another device or browser. Once Supabase is connected, your progress will sync to the cloud. You can check the current status on the My Progress page.
Why is the Firefighter (FDNY) track marked provisional?
The Firefighter track is marked provisional because no current open-competitive FDNY notice was available in full when the track was added. Its practice questions still help with the general abilities DCAS tests, but always follow the official FDNY Notice of Examination for the exam you applied for.
